If there’s one thing we know about Mitsubishi Motors, like the rest of the world, this automaker is moving towards greener pastures with eco-friendly vehicles. A part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, a lot of interesting technology for powertrains and entertainment should be showing up within the next few years. While we’re all waiting for Mitsubishi to release its next vehicle model, either a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), or an all-electric vehicle, the automaker is fine tuning the models in its current lineup. The Eclipse Cross will be released as a PHEV soon enough, but until then, the newest model to get an upgrade is the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Debuting a new vehicle during an auto show is always a great way to get attention. Mitsubishi Motors North America unveiled the next generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for the 2023 model year during the 2022 Twin Cities Auto Show, running May 14-22, 2022. Set to be available in the later half of 2022, it’s a good time to start making noise. Not many specs have been released just yet, but there are noticeable improvements for the powertrain that will make the Outlander PHEV even more formidable.

“Since its launch in March 2022, the gasoline version of all-new Outlander has been a homerun, setting sales records monthly even in the face of global supply challenges…When sales begin in the U.S., the 2023 Outlander PHEV will take its place as the flagship of the Mitsubishi fleet. It is the most advanced and best equipped vehicle we have ever sold, and it is the perfect blend of quiet and clean electric motoring, with the range and ease of refueling of a gasoline-powered vehicle.” – Mark Chaffin, MMNA president and CEO

All modern Mitsubishi Motors SUVs are coming with the automaker’s integrated vehicle-dynamics control system, the Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Able to handle a number of situations for various weather and road conditions, consumers have up to seven models to choose from to offer better control and responsiveness. Nothing like a little more security and confidence when behind the wheel of an SUV, regardless of the terrain. The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with the same AWD system to give this eco-friendly vehicle the same performance edge as the rest of the lineup.

Also upgraded for 2023, the all-new Outlander PHEV comes equipped with a new generation of the Mitsubishi Motors’ twin-motor 4WD PHEV system. Able to generate much more power in the front and rear motors, we should see a comparable difference when compared to the output of the previous model, 300 horsepower and 390 lb-ft. of torque. In addition, the size of the drive battery has been increased, leading to an increased range for driving in all-electric mode, as well as the overall driving range. Specs have yet to be reported, but last year’s model could travel for 24 miles on just the electric motor before needing to kick in the gasoline engine.

There should be some new tech popping up in Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in the coming years. These days, an 8-inch smartphone link display comes standard, featuring Google Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and HD Radio. According to Alliance 2030, that relationship with Google is paying off. With the use of the Alliance Cloud, we’re about to see the first full software-defined vehicle. Now that should be really interesting.
