Mitsubishi Motors Wins SUV of the Year from Puros Autos for Second Consecutive Year
When it comes to buying a new car, a great way to learn what’s new or what’s best is to read up on cars currently in the market and what automotive journalists and publications are saying about them. Many sources not only post reviews of new cars, they also have “Best of” lists and competitions for the best-of-the-best. One publication that’s been growing in popularity is Puros Autos, representing the Hispanic demographic of the auto market. Every year, they have their “Car of the Year with a Latin Flavor” awards, and in 2021-2022, the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV won the title of “SUV of the Year”. For 2022-2023, it’s none other than the green sibling, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV that wins the same award.
This would be the second consecutive year that Mitsubishi has won the award from Puros Autos. With a lot of love amongst the demographic, Mitsubishi Motors has a higher percentage of Hispanic buyers than any other automaker currently in the market. Furthermore, according to Puros Autos, one out of every four cars sold in the United States is bought by a Hispanic consumer. At the moment, the Hispanic market share is also starting to outpace the overall market by almost three-to-one. 25-33-percent is a large number when it comes to sales, and if the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was already popular, surely its plug-in hybrid version would be too. In fact, the Outlander PHEV is the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV.
“We are honored to receive the coveted 2023 Car of the Year with a Latin Flavor award for the SUV category from Puros Autos for the second year in a row…With room for the whole family across three rows of seats, electric motoring for up to 38 miles with the added convenience of a gasoline engine, and a bold style that sets it apart from anything else on the road, the Outlander PHEV is the flagship of Mitsubishi Motors.” – Mark Chaffin, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) President and CEO
Nothing like an electric motor or two to change the way consumers look at an already popular model. Many automakers take classic models and add an electric battery pack or an electric motor to gauge how consumers will react, especially with the current shift to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rocking the auto industry. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV came to North America in 2018 after already having much success overseas. When the automaker started to upgrade its lineup for the next generation of models, the Outlander PHEV was not left behind. Adding more power to the plug-in hybrid SUV, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was equipped with a 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine paired with a 350-volt, 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powered two electric motors (one 114 horsepower motor attached to the front axle, and a 134 horsepower motor in the rear). This new powertrain offered a total of 38 miles of all-electric range and up to 420 miles of overall range.
A new bold style with the new Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield on the front fascia, an advanced vehicle architecture, award-winning interior, seven-passenger seating, convenient features, and legendary Mitsubishi SUV capability, the Outlander PHEV got the works. It even comes with the new generation of Mitsubishi Motors’ twin-motor Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, designed to handle a variety of driving conditions to keep the driver in control. No wonder it’s so popular.
