MMNA Announces Two-Phase Plan for the Rest of the Decade
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has a lot on its plate these days, and we’re waiting to see what comes next. A part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the Japanese automaker invested in the new Ampere battery-electric vehicle (BEV) facility, and new models are said to already be underway. For the automaker as a whole, “Challenge 2025” was announced to introduce new models by the next fiscal year. Shortly after, “Momentum 2030” was shared, said to introduce new models for the North American lineup. It’s been a long time coming, but with the Outlander PHEV showing its age, and the discontinuation of the Mitsubishi Mirage, the lineup is looking a little thin.
During the third-quarter sales report for MMNA, we can see a drop in sales for just about every model in the lineup. This spells some major trouble if the automaker wants to stay afloat. That may be why MMNA announced plans to nearly double the amount of models offered in the lineup. The automaker also wants to release new vehicles in other segments. After all, the Mitsubishi Mirage and Mitsubishi Mirage G4 were kicked to the curb to make room for new models – possibly something smaller than an SUV for once.
There is the xForce model that was released strictly for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region – Southeast Asia, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African countries. Although we won’t see it in the States, Mitsubishi Motors has claimed this will be the new core model for upcoming entries. Smaller than the Outlander Sport, that spells good news for hatchbacks and other passenger cars. Right now, we’re focused on the collaborations between Nissan and Mitsubishi to bring a new pickup truck and a new BEV to North America.
As for Momentum 2030, the business plan revisited a lot of old Mitsubishi concepts. We saw the return of the Mitsubishi Engberg Tourer, once said to be the replacement for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the e-Evolution concept, and the eX concept. The reason these models may be in the spotlight is because of the second phase of MMNA’s new business plan – electrification. It’s about time, right? Hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are part of the plans to double up the lineup. According to the automaker, a new or completely refreshed vehicle will debut each year between 2026 and 2030.
It’s not a lot of time when compared to other automakers who have been releasing new entries since 2020, but it could all be a part of the plan. Watch and see what works, and then improve on the good while avoiding the bad. It could be why we still haven’t seen that fabled Mitsubishi C-D segment vehicle announced during the Alliance 2025 mid-term announcement. Or we could get something new altogether. We’re all hoping for Mitsubishi Motors to show us what it can do with a sports car. After all, the e-Evolution concept is supposed to mark the return of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution as a high-performance electric crossover. Anything could happen at this point.
