Mitsubishi Motors is seeing a new kind of success in the states with its release of the new generation Outlander for 2022, a lot more success with the Outlander PHEV since its release to the states, and the specs for the New 2023 Outlander PHEV are already out. Q3 of sales was some of the best for Mitsubishi Motors, with a 43.3-percent increase of YTD sales in comparison with 2021, and yet something is still in the back of our heads. Back in 2020, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance held a conference to announce their business strategy for moving forward, with Mitsubishi Motors set to lead the pack with the first new model to enter the market. Well, it’s been two years, and where is it? The Mitsubishi XFC Concept on display at Vietnam Motor Show 2022 is a strong bet.

When Mitsubishi first announced it would be bringing a new model to the lineup, we all knew one thing: it was going to be a car C-segment or D-segment car for Mitsubishi. Not a lot to go on – this could be a small family car or a large passenger car – and we know how much Mitsubishi loves its SUVs. There were a lot of possibilities, even talk of the new Mitsubishi Lancer as a crossover or bringing back an electric version of the original Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The automaker has played with the idea of a new high-performance all-electric model (who hasn’t?), and they might finally have something to fill the gap. If Mitsubishi did bring back the Lancer or a model like it and put Lancer Evolution DNA into an electric vehicle (EV), the Mitsubishi XFC Concept is the closest we’ve got so far, and it’s not even an EV.

“We will [be launching] the new compact SUV sequentially in the ASEAN markets including Vietnam in fiscal year 2023…In the future, we plan to add an electrified variant to the lineup and to also roll it out in regions outside ASEAN. We hope to grow the model from a vehicle for the ASEAN market to a global strategic vehicle, making it a core model like the sales-leading Xpander crossover MPV.” – Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors

Okay, so the new Mitsubishi Concept will be heading to the South East Asian market and Vietnam before possibly making its way west, but the unveiling at Vietnam was set up for a release on a global scale, so there’s still a possibility that this is the car we’ve been waiting for. Based on looks alone, the Mitsubishi XFC Concept looks like a high-performance compact SUV with muscular tones, larger wheels, fender flares in the front and rear, and a lot of ground clearance. Yes, ground clearance.

The Mitsubishi XFC Concept is set up to be the new core model for the future of the Mitsubishi Motors lineup. Able to offer ample cargo room as well as passenger space (lots of leg room in the rear seats), and some of the best passenger comfort in its class, this compact SUV is made to do it all. A passenger car, a high-performance car, both waiting for an off-road adventure, that’s the new Mitsubishi XFC Concept. Able to offer smooth handling, the driver is in control no matter the terrain, with all current Mitsubishi Motors models coming with All-Wheel Control (AWC) or Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). This is the automaker’s version of an all-wheel drive system, for keeping the vehicle safe and stable in even the harshest road conditions – even if there isn’t one.

More ground clearance also lends itself to new driving modes. The known four are Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud. Made to handle all kinds of road and weather conditions, Wet mode will be especially helpful during the random showers Florida gets all-year-round. Add in a dash of modern car technology (no Google OS just yet), and the Mitsubishi XFC Concept is shaping up to be a great addition to the lineup.

Now, we just have to wait and see what happens. Follow along with all Mitsubishi Motors news when you follow us on University Mitsubishi social media.
