A Closer Look at Mitsubishi’s 3 Subcompact Cars

A few weeks ago, Nissan and Mitsubishi joined forces to meld technology and car design for better-than-ever models. We know Nissan is good with the EVs, and Mitsubishi has mastered PHEVs, but what else do they bring to the table? How about cars for the “everyday Joe” that have great fuel economies? During this new joint-venture, Nissan may be able to adapt and benefit from the following cars as well.
2017 Mitsubishi Mirage
First up is the original Mitsubishi Mirage, which is one of the most fuel-efficient subcompact cars on the market. Powered by a 1.2-liter MIVEC DOHC 12-valve 3-cylinder engine, and coupled with a 5-speed CVT transmission, the car has a fuel economy of 37/43 mpg city/highway. But how is that possible?
For one, the DOHC, or “Double Overhead Cam” is a design being used in engines today to outperform those with a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC). In addition, “MIVEC” is the name given to Mitsubishi’s valve variable timing design, a process that optimizes vehicle performance and fuel economy. And finally, CVT transmission or “Continuous Variable Transmission” allows the vehicle to switch between gears seamlessly without the loss of power or fuel.
The mechanics are great, but the style is even better. Inside, drivers get plenty of convenient features, like FAST key entry system, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, and wireless connectivity for MP3 music streaming. On top of that, drivers and passengers can rest easy with automatic climate control and heated front seats. Lastly, the Mitsubishi Mirage has several packages available for cargo storage and safety.
The Mitsubishi Mirage has three trims, with the base (ES) starting at $12,995. It’s backed by Mitsubishi’s usual warranties – a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, anti-corrosion coverage for 7 years/100,000 miles, and roadside assistance for 5 years, unlimited miles.
2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4
Not to be confused as a trim or variation of the Mirage, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is its own sporty vehicle. They do share some qualities however, such as the same engine and high fuel economy. The Mirage G4 has an EPA of 35 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.
On select trims, drivers can enjoy some of the luxurious features, such as leather trim and heated front seats. A modern vehicle today wouldn’t be complete without a Bluetooth hands-free phone system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity. Plus, some of the latest safety features, and keeping with the sport look of the Mirage G4, it rides on 15-inch dark chrome alloy wheels.
Available in two trims, the starting MSRP for the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is $13,995. It’s backed by the same warranties as the Mitsubishi Mirage.
2017 Mitsubishi i-Miev
A little different from the above subcompact cars, the i-Miev doesn’t come with a 1.2-liter internal combustion engine. Instead, it’s all-electric, powered by a 16 kWh Lithium-ion battery. With 66-horsepower, we don’t expect little cars zipping down the highway, but with a 62-mile range, we can bet it will get you where you need to go (just charge up whenever possible on road trips).
Speaking of charging up, EV and PHEV charging stations are starting to pop up throughout Florida, especially in Miami. With the i-Miev’s CHAdeMO Level 3 DC Quick Charger, the car has an 80% charge in just 30 minutes. Additionally, if you want a personal home charger, the available AeroEnvironment delivers a full charge in just 6 hours.
The starting MSRP for the Mitsubishi I-Miev is $22,995. The warranties are a little different for an all-electric car, however. The basic warranty and powertrain warranty have been lowered to three years/36,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles, respectively. The lithium-ion batteries also get their own warranty, good for 8 years/100,000 miles.
With vehicles like this from Mitsubishi, it’s safe to say it won’t be pulling any punches once Nissan gets further involved and thrown into the mix. Check out or inventory, and see what you can find today.
