The Mitsubishi Mirage Really is the Most Reliable Hatchback
Does anyone remember that lovely little story we mentioned about a couple in Minnesota, USA who swore by their Mitsubishi Mirage? Reliable and affordable, with the title of most fuel-efficient (gasoline-powered) vehicle on the market, this couple had driven for over 400,000 miles in their Mirage hatchback in a little less than six years. Often forgotten about for new vehicles with modern technology, it’s easy to forget about the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage, but in 2020 and 2021, Mitsubishi Motors was able to out due the competition with a surprising surge in sales, especially for the Mitsubishi Mirage. How did it happen?
2020 was a bad year for everyone. Every industry took a hit and many companies had to pause or shut down. At one time, automakers had to shut down manufacturing facilities, which meant no new vehicles being produced, or not enough to meet consumer demand. Even when automakers returned to production, many put their focus on helping out their local communities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Then in 2021, the semiconductor chip shortage really put pressure on automakers, leading to some pushing back plans for concepts set for production or remove certain technological features altogether. Many automakers around the world were unable to produce their target number of units, and suffered in sales.
Mitsubishi Motors, however, has been a little slow on tech updates in its vehicles. The 7-inch smartphone-link display audio system that comes standard in the Mitsubishi Mirage may not be as advanced as some of the infotainment systems in vehicles today, but that’s exactly what kept Mitsubishi Motors alive and well. Remember we said the Mirage is sometimes easily forgotten? During 2020 and 2021, when the competition couldn’t keep up, the Mirage hatchback became the newest big money item of the auto market, and consumers were buying them like hot cakes. At the end of the day, the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback offers a lot of great features for the average consumer.
High-performance has never been a term people would use to describe Mitsubishi Motors. Even with the resurrection of Ralliart, the best we can hope for are appearance packages and after-market accessories that can tweak performance. The powertrain may be a simple 78 horsepower 1.2L MIVEC DOHC engine, but one thing the Mitsubishi Mirage has always been able to boast about was fuel economy we mentioned. The automaker made continuously variable transmission (CVT) a standard on most trims, offering a fuel economy of 36 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. The base trim comes with a 5-speed manual transmission as the standard, able to upgrade to the CVT, and it still offers a fuel economy of 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.
Another plus for Mitsubishi Motors is the incredibly long warranties they offer on all new vehicles. Every new Mitsubishi vehicles comes with a basic limited warranty for 5 years/60,000 miles, a powertrain limited warranty for 10 years/100,000 miles, 7 years or 100,000 miles of anti-corrosion coverage, and roadside assistance. Many of these are much longer than the coverage found on most vehicles today, ensuring that consumers can keep their Mitsubishi Mirage in perfect condition for up to a decade! No wonder it’s so reliable.
