There was a lot of speculation about the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and when its 2017 model would debut. Some thought it wouldn’t be until early 2017, but they must have been pleasantly surprised when the 2017 Outlander Sport came out earlier this year. Although it’s only available in one trim (at this time), that just means drivers need not worry about which trim to choose and the possibility of missing out on key features. So let’s talk 2017 Outlander Sport ES 2.0!

Engine

Powered by the faithful 2.0-liter MIVEC DOHC 16-valve I4 engine, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport doesn’t stray far from its roots. For those unaware, “DOHC” stands for “double overhead camshaft”, a device that operates the intake and exhaust valves of an engine. A DOHC, unlike a SOHC, operates these valves independently, and thus leads to a better performing car. In the same vain, MIVEC, or Mitsubishi’s brand name VVT technology is also designed to increase performance, lower emissions, and optimize fuel efficiency. All of this results in 148 horsepower, and an EPA of 24/30 mpg city/highway, which is great for an SUV.

Although the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is only available in one trim, there are minor changes that can change the price tag of $19,795. Naturally, the 2017 model comes standard with 5-speed manual transmission. If drivers would rather have an automatic transmission, Mitsubishi offers its own CVT, which allows for seamless switching between gears without abrupting the speed threshold of the engine. Furthermore, drivers may also choose the ES 2.0 AWC, for a SUV with all-wheel drive. The price changes are $20,995 and $22,495 respectively.

Design

The exterior design of the Outlander Sport lives up to its name-class as a compact SUV. It’s shorter than the original Mitsubishi Outlander, shaving off a whole foot in length, and taking a few inches off the top. The Outlander Sport comes with many goodies, starting with heated, power-adjustable exterior mirrors with turn signal indicators; rear privacy glass; all-season wiper blades; and rear LED combination tail lights, all riding on 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels fitted with all-season tires.

The inside of the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is just as nice, able to seat up to five people comfortably, especially with automatic A/C climate control. This compact SUV doesn’t skimp on cargo storage, able to increase its available space with a 60/40 split-fold rear seatback, rear cargo storage, and cargo tie-down utility hooks. Passengers in the back will enjoy the rear heater floor ducts, and the driver may appreciate the leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Technology

For entertainment, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CFD/MP3 audio system doesn’t hurt. Plus, FUSE Hands-free link system with Bluetooth tech and steering wheel mounted controls are a nice touch. For convenience, a multi-information display showing stats ranging from standard things like the odometer to drive mode is on the dashboard for the driver.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport comes with all the basics in safety today: advanced dual-stage front airbags with seven airbags around the entire vehicle, LATCH ready child seat anchors, Mitsubishi’s patented RISE body construction, and more. Mitsubishi Motors is known to have the best warranties in the biz, with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000 mile new vehicle warranty, and 7-year/100,000 mile anti-corrosion and perforation limited warranty.
