The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Hybrid

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a surprise revelation under the hybrid SUVs. With so many CUVs and SUVs to choose from, there was a need to separate the vehicles, and it often comes down to one or two things. That’s where the Outlander comes into the discussion with the sophomore PHEV edition. 

In addition to the gas engine, electric motors on the vehicle are what drives the front and rear wheels. It delivers a whisper-quiet ride and while the gas engine is in use,  will spend much of its time recharging the battery. The total horsepower is 190 which is achieved when the 2.0-liter engine when it’s combined with a 12-kilowatt lithium battery. 

The PHEV will deliver over 70 mpg equivalent on straight electric power for 22 miles. Mitsubishi has reshaped itself from small economy SUVs to a sublimely classy contender. With its pleasing but straightforward exterior lines, rebooted interior and multispoked alloys, the Japanese automaker has created the must test drive vehicle.

There are several Outlander trim levels, and the PHEV carves a niche in the economy mileage yet practical utility vehicle market with this all-wheel drive contender. The vehicle can be outfitted with a charming leather-trimmed interior that was well constructed. A muscular leather-wrapped steering wheel frames the deeply seated two-gauge dash cluster.

The soft-touch surfaces blended nicely with some of the lacquered surfaces and were offset by patterned insets around the slick German-inspired gear selector. The large cubbies, cup holders and storage along with excellent legroom in the front and back make for a super comfortable ride. The SUV is a good highwayman, quickly cruising the open road and offers the opportunity to recharge the battery on the fly quickly. 

Despite the longer wheelbase, parking is a snap, with a useful backup camera and excellent sightlines. The rear seats drop, and the headroom is slightly higher. Mitsubishi sound system is the booming Rockford-Fosgate, and it has an infotainment touch screen. 

It is loaded with Apple Carplay and Android Auto and it has controls on the steering wheel which get you into the system seamlessly. Communication on the hands-free talk system is pretty simple. It includes LED headlamps, heated seats, powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, and a full safety array.

The vehicle is small but it has noteworthy changes that have taken place inside the Outlander PHEV for 2019. The most appreciated changes are the redesigned front seats for comfort and support. All Outlanders now have rear air-conditioning vents, along with illuminated window switches and a driver-controlled automatic up/down switch for all windows.

Although the Outlander PHEV does have a clean look that has been improved for 2019 with an updated grille and headlights, plus it has revised 18-inch alloy wheels. This Mitsubishi vehicle is understatedly handsome. The plug-in hybrid Outlander is distinguished by its unique badging, plus a charge port that is hidden behind what looks like a new fuel door.
