If you’re looking for a crossover that has all of the fun and mannerisms of a regular car, but the practicality of an SUV, then the Mazda 2018 CX-5 is the one for you. This fan-favorite doesn’t just have an excellent fuel economy of 35 mpg, but it’s also budget-friendly, especially as a pre-owned model. Though this car isn’t the most energetic of others in its segment, it’s still very lightweight and has a finely tuned suspension, which aids in creating a thrilling drive. Its great driving behaviors, affordable price, and interior features are exactly why it has been chosen as Driver’s Auto Mart’s Used Car of The Week!

Engine and Drive

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 has only one but incredible engine option. The standard motor is the 2.5-liter engine, which also has 4-cylinders. This motor is paired with a 6-speed automatic, and drives on 187 horsepower with 186 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) is the standard setup, while all-wheel-drive (AWD) is optional.

The 6-speed automatic transmission helps to provide good fuel economy numbers, such as a city EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) range of 25 mpg for FWD’s and 24 for AWD’s, then a highway economy of 31 mpg for FWDs and 30 mpg for AWDs.

While this vehicle may not be the fastest out there in the market, it still has just enough strength to make some swift moves whether you’re zooming from a stop or dealing with speedy traffic. The ride is firm, but not to the point where it’s too harsh, and has an overall light feel to it.

Exterior

The CX-5 SUV embraces the simple and sophisticated design, bringing in all of the muscles, lines and curves that are often seen in a crossover compact. Moreover, its slightly forward posture gives a bit more of an athletic feel. Standard exterior particulars are 17-inch wheels on the base model, while the Grand Touring model gets 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The stylish grille is still in season for 2021, and the LED headlights help to liven things up. On top of this, there is a roof rack (on the Grand Touring) for extra usefulness.

Interior and Standard Features

The interior accommodates 5 passengers within its two rows, it also has good head- and legroom in both front and rear seats, which are also covered up by cloth in Sport and Touring models. Meanwhile, the top-tier Grand Touring models have leather seat trim. Then, the wide-opening rear doors allow for easier access to the back, which is great when installing child seats. Additionally, rear seats easily fold thanks to the 40/20/40 split configuration, thereby maximizing cargo space to about 60 cubic feet.

Standard amenities and conveniences on the Sport model include cloth seats, keyless entry with push-button start, 17-inch wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, electronic parking brake, the Smart City Brake Support active-safety system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rearview camera. The standard infotainment system also involves a 7-inch touch screen with 4-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio, twin USB inputs, and an auxiliary port.
