Every year, there are many events for automakers to show what they’re made of up in major cities. Mostly auto shows, these are nice and all, but what happened to the days of rally car races? It feels like those hosted by automakers are few and far between, but that doesn’t mean they can’t create a team to compete in officially recognized rally car races around the world. For instance, the 2024 Asia Cross Country Rally (hereafter, AXCR) from Thailand to Malaysia is taking place this summer, and Mitsubishi will be showing up again with the Triton pickup truck and represented by Team Mitsubishi Ralliart.

“Last year, we confirmed the toughness and durability of the all-new Triton in the grueling conditions of AXCR 2023…The rally also reaffirmed that the Triton’s strengths lie in its sporty handling and its excellent road handling on rough terrain. This year will be our second year competing with the new-gen Triton, and we have made the Triton rally car more powerful and enhanced its driving performance by widening the tread further so that we can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with competitors’ vehicles with high-displacement engines. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart is taking on the crown, and we look forward to your support.” – Hiroshi Masuoka, team director of Team Mitsubishi Ralliart

Since 2022, Mitsubishi has been showing off the capabilities of the new generation of its Triton pickup truck. An overseas model only, we still wait to see the day that it will come to the States. The Triton is a midsize pickup truck, and the market is ripe with potential for this segment. First showing us what the Mitsubishi Ralliart group can do, every year, we saw what the 1-ton pickup truck could do in 2022 with Team Mitsubishi Ralliart at the AXCR. Last year, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart went with a red and black motif that symbolized the lively energy of lava gushing from a volcano. This year, Team Mitsubishi claims to claim the championship with a modified cross-country version of the Triton pickup truck (the T1 prototype), and continues the theme with red and gun mental gray graphics that represent the previous gushing lava now solidifying into hard volcanic rock. How poetic.

2024 marks the 29th AXCR in history. The ASEAN region’s largest cross-country rally, this rally race takes drivers south through Thailand and into Malaysia over 1250 miles of challenging terrain. More demanding than last year, at least 600 miles over this run comes with mountains, jungles, and river crossings that will test the road handling and durability of a vehicle, as well as its performance. A ceremonial start for the 2024 AXCR will be held in Surat Thani, on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the south of Thailand, on August 11th. The official start of the competition begins the next day, on the 12th, set to conclude on the 17th at the capital, Kuala Lumpur after crossing into Malaysia on the 15th.

We look forward to what Team Mitsubishi Ralliart can do with the modified T1 prototype. If you want to follow along with us on Mitsubishi and rally car races, join us on University Mitsubishi social media.
