In the case of turbo-diesels, this fuel efficiency advantage can often reach an impressive 25 percent.

This enhanced fuel economy can be attributed to two key factors:

  1. Fuel Composition: The distinction in fuel composition between gasoline and diesel is pivotal. Diesel fuel boasts a higher energy content per gallon, with approximately 35,000 calories compared to gasoline’s 31,000 calories. This discrepancy translates into an increased energy output, leading to improved efficiency.
  2. Engine Design: The differences in engine design also significantly contribute to the superior fuel efficiency of diesel vehicles. Diesel engines feature a lengthier compression stroke, enabling the creation of greater torque during combustion. This enhanced torque generation translates into more efficient energy utilization, further boosting overall fuel economy.

Maintenance Costs

The enduring strength and resilience offered by diesel vehicles are among their primary advantages. At first glance, the elevated upfront costs associated with diesel vehicles might appear discouraging. However, a comprehensive study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute dispels this concern. The research reveals that over the vehicle’s lifespan, diesel owners can expect to save as much as 27 percent on fuel expenses when compared to their gasoline counterparts. Even more intriguing, when contrasting diesel pickups with their gasoline counterparts, the former exhibited resale values that were up to 70 percent higher.
