All The Ways To Not Lose Your Mind Road Trippin’ With Kids

June 23rd, 2022 by

The summer months often invite various activities, vacations, and even more so with road trippin’ adventures. These trips may also invite much frustration with parents, as they may have to deal with their kids often leaving the car untidy or downright gross. Here are a few tips to help you in that department.

A Fresh Start

It may seem pointless as you expect your inevitable doom, but hear us out. Before giving kids a lecture, cleaning out all of the junk and grime before a long road trip may ultimately give them some sort of visual to aim for.

While there’s also a considerable chance that these critters will quickly forget about this talk during their Disneyland venture, it’s always better to start off strong and find ways to maintain some level of consistency.

Set Clear Expectations

As much as we’d like them to be, kids aren’t mind-readers. Seriously disapproving looks without any context behind them simply won’t give you what you’re looking for. Clearly communicate to your kids what your expectations are in regards to the cleanliness of the vehicle and break down how you would like them to go about that.

For all that, it’s usually best to keep your expectations low and realistic. While you probably shouldn’t expect your team to begin waxing the car, you can at least make a rule to put all of their trash into a designated trash bag and to make sure they empty it as soon as they reach a stop.

Create A Cleanup Kit

This doesn’t have to be so elaborate, but a few necessities such as a  small tub of disinfectant wipes, small trash bags, and paper towels should be just enough for cleaning up potential spills and messes. Perhaps even bring along a lint roller for picking up bits of crushed food, or better yet, a small cordless vacuum cleaner.

It’s also a good idea to carry some extra trash bags and cleaners if you know one or multiple children are prone to motion sickness.

Get An Organizer

Another useful tip is to invest in some organizers for the car, particularly to put in the backseat. Many organizers can easily slip over front seats, with easy access to everything your kids play with like crayons or toys in their reach. There are some that even have space for a tablet and earbuds.

Tiny Trash Bags and Mini Clean Ups

Sometimes small but intentional consistencies are more effective than high-intensity levels. Here’s a small project that might be useful, try giving each of your kids a small plastic bag for each day of travel. Their assignment will be to put their trash in the bag every time there’s a stop. During these stops, you can gather their trash and toss it in a garbage can nearby. Perhaps use the end of the day to vacuum a bit (if needed) and reorganize the area.
